WICHE Policy Alert: July 29, 2014 - ETS: The Progress and Future of Common Core Assessments
A recent publication from the Educational Testing Service updates the progress states are making towards implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). "Coming Together to Raise Achievement: New Assessments for the Common Core State Standards," takes a deeper look at the efforts of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced), in addition to alternate assessment consortia like the Dynamic Learning Maps Consortium (DLM) and the National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) Consortium. The report notes the numerous challenges that lie ahead as states attempt to effectively align teacher preparation, instruction, and policy, but also highlights some of the best practices to date, including online assessments being developed in places like Idaho and North Carolina. The report also includes timelines for all CCSS assessment consortia and state membership information.

WICHE Policy Alert: May 27, 2014 - Southern Regional Education Board: State Progress Towards Common Core Implementation
"State Implementation of Common Core State Standards," a recent summary report from the Southern Regional Education Board, examines how select states are implementing the new college-and-career-ready standards and assessments. State profile information includes varying approaches and progress made towards implementation, the availability of teaching resources and professional development, and teacher evaluation and accountability. Implications and recommendations include the need for steady funding and policy support from state legislatures and leaders, more collaboration between key stakeholders, and increased access to CCSS-aligned instructional resources. The report further cites the need for developing additional state capacity to identify emerging needs, support key staff, and develop new ways to effectively collect and analyze data.

WICHE Policy Alert - January 28, 2014: Community College Research Center: What States Can Do to Effectively Address Rigorous College-Readiness Standards and Assessments
"Early Assessments and Transition Curricula: What States Can Do," a new policy brief from the Community College Research Center, examines how to best make high school students better prepared for postsecondary education in the wake of the Common Core State Standards or other more rigorous college-and-career-ready assessments. The brief lays out what existing research can tell policymakers about early assessments before asking questions that directly address the process of creating transition courses. State policy considerations include the need to improve collaboration between K-12 and higher education to help define the knowledge and skills needed to become college ready and the idea of creating college-readiness mandates in an effort to reduce the need for remediation and broaden enrollment in transition courses.
